Books!

This week Facebook told me that the author of one
of our favorite children's book series, Anna Dewdney,
had passed away.  If you have small children or
work with small children, you will likely recognize
her as the author of the Llama Llama book series.
I personally love that series - and Max loves to
point out the expression on the llams's face
when he's "mad at mama" or when llama
is supposed to be sleeping but is instead "calling
for his mama" (story of my life when putting
Max to bed). Mrs Dewdney died of brain cancer,
at the age of 50 (this is also unfathomable to me).
In lieu of a funeral service, she requested that
her friends and family read a book to a child instead.

This just got me thinking about all the of the reading
we do with Max.  Generally, our reading occurs
at night time, as the water is filling for the bath,
and then after bath but before we turn out the lights.
We also like to play "library" where we take all the
books off his shelves and bring them down, arrange
them in rows, and read them one by one.

It's honestly something I look forward to
and enjoy probably as much as he does.
He's always negotiating the number of books
we will read before turning out the lights
and notices immediately if a new book
has been added to his shelves.
We change the books frequently - and the
shelves are often sprinkled with library books,
as well as books we own. I've been known
to put out special books for the holidays
and we even did a book per day with our
elf last year. I guess, all this to say, I find such
a comfort in reading and I'm glad that Max
does too.
If you need a a few ideas for new books
for a little one in your life, I made a collage
of the ones we've been reading frequently with
Max above.

Max the Brave - the story of a fearless kitten who is supposed
to be chasing mice, but the mouse tricks him into chasing
a monster.

MAX - the story of a seagull who befriends the local
fish and chip shop owner.  Eventually the owner moves
and Max has to find him in a new city.

It Came in the Mail - (Max loves to get mail and
peer inside the mailbox, so I knew this would
be a hit).  The main character in the story, Liam,
writes to his mailbox and is surprised when the
mailbox responds!

Let's Go to the Hardware Store - (this book
seemed lame at the library...but Max loves
it and we read it every night). Dad, Flora, the
narrator all make a trip to the hardware store -
and talk about all the tools they see inside!

Pom Pom Panda - the story of a little Panda
who wakes up on the wrong side of the bed -
and nearly everything that happens afterward
bothers him.  (I like to substitute Max's name
for the main character and then talk about
how we can turn our day around if something
makes us mad).

Orange Like an Aardvark - the story of some
carpenter ants who are very nervous every time
they drill a hole that an aardvark might be
waiting to chomp them!

And of course - any book that involves
Maisy the Mouse (at one point I think we had nearly
every Maisy book checked out from the library), Peppa
the Pig (Max will actually talk with a British
accent sometimes, just like Peppa and George), and
Elephant and Piggy (every book has some kind of
important underlying message.
Happy Reading!

10 Things about Max - September edition

Everyone told me three would be harder than two -
and they were TOTALLY right! Max is (more) vocal,
(more) opinionated, and generally lets you know what
he does and does not want to be doing.
However, he is also, funny, charming, curious,
and tender.  When a drawer front fell
on my toe/foot this weekend, he said,
"Mama, I can kiss it for you" and then
asked Mims to get him off the counter,
"because mommy's foot is hurting". Lately,
he's been saying that he's "too scared" to
go to bed.  All that really means (I think) is that
he actually doesn't want to be going to bed. He is
willing to compromise on the going to bed
with a quick trip to the bathroom and rock in
in the chair. He continues to have a bath every
night.  Told me his favorite food was sandwiches.
And, his favorite colors were green, and blue,
and purple. Max can also be bribed
to do nearly anything with the promise of some
time playing apps on your phone or a lifesaver.
Here are just ten more funny
and memorable things he's doing right now:
(I'm going to sprinkle in some random photos
of him taken over the last month or so
that never made it into a blog post).

1.) If you ask him to tell you a secret, he will
almost always say "Everywhere you go, you find
Mc/Nick junior.  We have no idea what this
means but he cackles with laughter after he tells us.

2.) He likes to check and see if he has "prune" fingers
after a long bath or time in the pool.

3.) He likes to yell "Cannonball" as he jumps
off the side of the pool.

4.) His favorite toy might be his stomp rocket.
He got this for his birthday from Uncle Nick
and Aunt Cassie. Funny story - one of the rockets
may or may not be stuck in our neighbors gutters.

5.) Loves chase and tag games

6.) If he could attend a fair or festival
every weekend, he most definitely would.
He has no fears when it comes to the rides
and will accept help from any carnival worker
if it brings him closer to the game/ride/bounce house etc.

7.) Recently he discovered "Clifford the Big Red" dog
on Netflix.  I loved these books growing up and it
thrills me that he now loves him too. If you ask
Max what made Clifford grow so big, he will tell
you "love" (which is what the intro song) says.
8.) His favorite snacks are combos, chicago style
popcorn, and cheez-its
9.)  Every night after his bath we look at the calendar
and talk about what the next day will look like (i.e.
will he be going to Jessi's house? Will it be a
Mim's and Grandpa day? Mommy/Daddy day?)
He loves to draw/scribble in the calendar blocks.

10.)  This weekend he told us repeatedly that
Penny (Auntie Stacy's dog) "cracks me up".

Bonus:  He still loves to do some Snap Chatting with me :)

This is just a smidgen of what makes Max
so funny and fun to be around!

Labor Day

This past weekend was an absolute gift.
The weather was perfectly sunshiney, we were surrounded
by family, Mims and Grandpa carted us everywhere,
and Mama got to take advantage of some Labor
Day sales. Three day weekends are really just the BEST!

Auntie Stacy (and Penny) picked Max and Mama up on Friday,
(Papa Rob stayed back to participate in his
fantasy football draft and power wash the house)
and with a quick(ish) stop at Starbucks, we
were on the road. Sometimes it seems we have
a well worn path on I-70 between Columbus
and Dayton. But, I'm not complaining.
Upon arriving - we decided on lunch at Chick-fil-A....
and an afternoon trip to the pool.
We rounded out Friday night with Skyline and
a trip to see Papaw and Mamaw.
The highlight for Max was playing bouncy ball
on their back porch and sending rockets
over their back neighbors fence. Papaw seems
to be in good spirits (he fell and broke his hip
about three weeks ago).

Saturday morning Mims and Grandpa went to
a flea market, leaving Auntie Stacy, Max and me
to our own devices.
Auntie Stacy and Max enjoyed some Clifford on
Netflix, building trains, and taking Penny outside!
Penny would have probably preferred to
sit outside in the sun all day...but we had
other plans of course :)
We took our little trio to the Greene and went SHOPPING!
Max hung out in the stroller...
and eventually played in the fountains for like
seven whole minutes before he saw the snow
cone shack and it was game over.
Thankfully, Auntie Stacy hung out with him while I
finished up shopping!
A quick stop at the local park...and we headed
home to Mim's and Grandpa's!
Saturday afternoon we hit the pool
again...where Max loves to pull random toys
out of the "treasure box" and play. This
particular afternoon it was water guns!

The highlight of Saturday was our
evening at Alter Fest!
Alter (my high school alma mater) has a family
friendly festival that they put on every
Labor Day weekend and it did not disappoint!
Max rode almost all the rides...but his favorite
was a walk through obstacle course/fun house
(I kept calling it American Ninja Warrior). It
had cargo nets, slides, stairs, swinging bridges...
and Max would have done it over and over
if the tickets were unlimited.

Sadly, they were not - so we had to
move on :) He won an inflatable
elephant at Plinko and Grandpa won
a giant inflatable hammer.

In going to the festival - we enforced one major
rule and that was "you have to walk". If you know Max,
you know he'd rather be carried EVERYWHERE.
Perched on my hip is literally his favorite place to be.
However, he did (for the most part) walk there
and back. The walk back to the car was made slightly
easier..as all he wanted to do was chase us with
his hammer. I just included the below series
of pictures because they make me laugh.

Man, just typing this has been exhausting...but
the fun didn't even stop here!  We woke up Sunday
morning - and had (you guessed it) even more plans!
Those plans included a nature walk, trip to
Grandma's Gardens, and shopping around in
Lebanon (home of my favorite store, Blume) -
while Mims and Grandpa took Max to see the trains.

I was too busy trying to remember every detail
of Blume (picture like an Anthropologie type
store but with more local type things) - so
sadly no more pictures - until the true highlight
of the evening - pizza/parmesan sticks and
SUNFLOWERS!
This sunflower patch has been growing
for a number of years in Centerville -
and we have taken Max every year.

So, so, so many bribes were involved
in trying to capture a picture perfect
moment...but in true three year old fashion...
you get what you get...and you don't throw
a fit :)

Cheesing so hard in those last two photos :)
Kids are so weird when they are trying
to figure out how to smile naturally. I know
this because of all the Zoo Kid summer
photos I've had to take over the last ten
years...it's so awkward. But, we shall
power on with the picture taking.

Our last hurrah was the Labor Day parade
on Monday morning.

This parade did not disappoint - fire trucks galore,
jeeps, corvettes, and the Shriners.  I mean honestly,
I still don't even know exactly what a Shriner is -
but they showed UP at the parade. Like all of
their vehicles and floats took up like half the
parade.

You know who else showed up?
This tiny school bus. Appropriately named, Buster.
The wiener mobile.
Motor cycle dudes with tiny dogs wearing sunglasses.
And my old high school band! Represent :)
And, Papa Rob!
He was able to make it down Monday morning...
and we spent the rest of Monday swimming,
chasing Max around with his inflatable elephant,
launching his new rocket, and chowing on our
favorite picnic foods (always and forever cheddar
brats, deviled eggs, and pasta salad).
So, that was the weekend in blogshell.
If you made it to the end of this long post -
I congratulate you :)
Hope your weekend was wonderful!
