Cousins on Kelley's Island

We just returned from what's becoming our
annual summer (weekend) trip to Kelley's Island!
This year was especially fun because we were
joined by Max's cousins, Charlotte and Pax.

Max and I made a grocery stop on Friday afternoon,
so we had the cooler stocked, bags packed, and i-pad charged
by the time Papa Rob got home on Friday.
Even though we left later in the afternoon - we made
good time...stopping even for a super classy dinner at
McDonald's.  Max played on the i-pad, played car bingo,
did some activity books, and tried to sleep....
but, (thankfully) we avoided the car nap.
*side note: the car nap at 5:00 NEVER
ends well for us because then he's up till like
midnight trying to party.  So we pull out
all the stops to make sure that doesn't happen.
I actually drove us (because Rob drives all day for
work, I try to offer, plus then I get to listen
to my own playlists :)

We rolled into the ferry at Marblehead
to the sweet sweet tunes of Justin Bieber.
Everyone was starting to get antsy...
so, the only remedy was to hit my favorite
play list -- which is basically, Despacito then
repeat times 100.
Since spending some recent time on Orcas Island,
we were total ferry boat pros!
We chugged along...and pulled
into Kelley's Island about 7:00....

This was the perfect time to catch
a beautiful sunset!
We also played outside in Grandma Marge's
front yard until the sun went down...
There were smores, games of chase,
playing with Uncle Nick's drone and
electronic skateboard, and even
bouncing on a giant air chair.
To "activate" the air chair - you just
fling it around the yard hoping to catch
some air.  Literally, it took four adults
to capture enough air to make a
medium(ish) chair....but boy did
the kids love it!
 They rolled, bounced, shrieked,
and even invited Mema onto the chair!

We finally convinced Max that it was
bed time...so we read 1 million stories (it's possible
that's an exaggeration), fired up the night light
and tucked him into the traveling cot
at the end of our bed.

Saturday dawned....and we were ready
to get outside again. Mostly because
I didn't want to wake anyone else
who was still sleeping in the house.
(Who are these people that
get to sleep past 7 AM?  I want
to be them!)
We walked about half a mile up the
road (keeping our eyes out for
the Lake Erie Water Snake) - but
ended up at a small, rocky beach.
I turned my back for like three
seconds and when i turned back,
Max had already made himself
at home in the water.

After scouring the beach for beach glass and
good skipping rocks...we headed home.
At home, everyone was up - so we made
breakfast and bounced!

Even though the weather was calling for rain -
we risked packing everything up and heading
to the beach!

Max was pumped to use these glow
stick water toys we brought...so he chased
those around for a solid hour....while also
bossing Pax around on how to NOT knock
down his sand castles :)

This was Pax's first time to the beach...and at
first he was a little unsure about the
texture of the sand.  But, with some
encouragement from his cousins and
some toys...he came around to it.

We stayed until lunch time...chasing the kiddos
around, running in and out of the water,
settling some sharing disputes, and generally
trying to figure out if it was going to rain or not.
Nick, Courtney, and Pax had to leave after lunch...
so Mema, Charlotte, Max, and I drove into
town.  We made pressed pennies, purchased ice and
got ice cream at Papa T's!

Max had his heart set on playing mini golf....
but it was hot, we were sweaty, and the lines
were loooooonnnnng. We convinced him
it would be just as much fun to come
back and go to the beach again!
This time, we were having so much
fun that I didn't take a single picture! ha!

We returned home for a birthday taco
dinner for Pop's and a side of early
bedtime for Max :) Papa Rob
built a fire his Boy Scout leaders
would be proud of and we
drank, talked, and chilled till bedtime.

Sunday morning brought more bouncing,
a final beach trip, and the plan to catch the
11:45 ferry.  We re-packed the car, said
our good-byes and headed out.
However, I think everyone had the same
idea....so we sat in the ferry line for awhile.
We did manage to catch the 12:30 ferry...
and passed all the additional time by
collecting rocks and throwing some
back int the lake!

Max is hoping to be a professional rock
skipper in no time. He just needs a little
more practice with his form...and rock choice.

Kelley's Island never disappoints...
between the sunsets, family time,
smores, and beach - we enjoyed
every minute of it!

Alright...I'm off to enjoy my CHILD FREE
weekend.  Bring on all the praise hands!!  :)
xoxo
