Summer Wind Down

Most of all the local schools started this week and that to me,
signals the end of summer. I can't let that milestone pass without
highlighting a few more fun things the Haucks have been up to.

Like most other Americans, we've been watching
our fair share of the Olympics.  My favorites (do the
Snapchat filters count as favorites?) are
gymnastics, swimming, and diving. The women's
gymnastics, especially the moments highlighting
those "final five" were truly outstanding.
We cheered on Michael Phelps too....and
lastly with the diving...I'm just so impressed with
all the flips and turns and handstands off the
diving board!
I bought this sidewalk chalk paint at the beginning
of summer, from the Target dollar bin...and we've
used it nearly every week.  It was super easy to
prepare (just add water!) and it made a practically
a whole bucket full of paint.  Max seems
to like doodling around with the paint
on our driveway and sidewalk.  I liked
coming home from work and seeing his weird
little abstract creations!

We visited the Plain Township pool with Auntie
Stacy on a Sunday...and it was a total blast!
There is a kids play area...and Max was definitely
getting braver walking through some of the water
squirts and going down all the slides.
There is also a bigger pool with zero entry for
kids and Max loved wading into that.
He also did about 100 jumps off the side...and this
is where Titi taught him to "cannonball".
We made muffins....chocolate chip of course....
And spent many Sunday nights swimming (and bathing)
over at Mema and Pop's house.  I have to say...enjoying
a Sunday swim, lingering over a longer cocktail hour...
and then having someone else make you dinner was
pretty fabulous! It almost always led to Max falling
asleep in the car on the way home too...which meant
zero bedtime battles for us.  :)
Summer time ZooKids was a blast!
We survived the heat and the crazy kids...
and convinced a five year old to take
our picture in the prairie dog cut outs :)
Max still likes the sand table (though it definitely
could use a cleaning and some new sand).
We have so many outdoor toys...they just rotate
between being used in the sand table, the pool, or
swing set.
We attempted to see "Finding Dory" - which would
have been Max's first movie but it was sold out!
So, as luck would have it - there was a paint your
own pottery shop across from the movie theatre and
we ended up there.  Max first set his eyes on an
enormous train bank - but I was able to persuade
him into painting the letters, "M, A, and X".
He was a little confused when we had to leave
them there to get fired in the kiln, but
came around to that idea.  We picked them up
about a week later and they turned out so cute!!
That same weekend we found a new park in New Albany
and explored with Auntie Stacy.  The playground
structure was all wooden and it had a fire pole.
Titi taught Max how to slide down the pole.

The park also has some nearby walking trails that
cross over a creek (with fish)! Max almost
stepped in the creek water....but managed to stay
dry.  He also managed to find a stick to carry
around and insisted on bringing it home with us.
It's so lovely to have Auntie Stacy so close.
She can always be counted on for a weekend hang out....
and she always finds the best parks!  And her house
is close to our favorite pizza place - Bellacino's!
The parmesan breadsticks are do die for.
As our summer ZooKid seasonals began to have to
leave for bigger and better things (namely, full time
jobs) we decided the best way to reward them for their
hard work - was a trip to our promotions department!
We met the sweetest little Bearcat - our binturong -
and her name was Fern.  She crawled across
everyone's shoulders and was absolutely adorable!

Stacy and I drove home late one Sunday evening
in early August to go see Lady Antebellum at the Fraze
Pavilion with our mom. While the show was much shorter
than we anticipated - they were fun to watch! I didn't
remember them having so many hits! Also worth
mentioning - because my mom knew we were going
to be getting home super late (driving back to Columbus
the same evening) - she made our lunches.  I don't know
if it was that fact that I didn't have to make it or what -
but that lunch was divine.
And of course, we are still trying to cram
as many park hangs into our evening as possible.
A three year old's energy level is insane (or maybe
it's just my three year old?) If we weren't going to
the park - he would be bouncing (literally) off our
couch and demanding we "watch" all his new tricks.

Sidenote:  every friday is jammie day at school - so
that's why he is still in his pajamas at the park :)
I try to visit the Worthington Farmer's Market
at least once in the summer.  I didn't know if we were
going to make it this year...but we crammed in a quick
visit two weekends ago! Parking was sort of a disaster -
but we pushed through - and we purchased a popsicle (for Max)....

And sunflowers for Mims (who Max was going to be
visiting later in the day)!
Finally, it wouldn't be summer unless I was begging
people for their extra zucchini.Thankfully, it seems
people are more than willing to hand over the zucchini.
In fact, I think most people are sick of it by August.
I'm more than happy to grate it, shred it, and now...
make noodles with it!
That's right, I've moved beyond zucchini bread....
and now I'm making noodles.  I got hooked on them
when I was doing my Advocare cleanse ....but they
are pretty expensive when you buy them from Whole Foods.
No more!  This spiralizer makes it sooooo
ridiculously easy minus all the carbs! Woohoo!

While summer is certainly dwindling away....
I'm sure we will cram some more adventures in
before Labor day! You know we never sit still :)
Stay tuned!

Irish Festival Fun

Way, way back before Papa Rob and I were together, I went to this local event
called the "Irish Festival" in Dublin.  I cringe now thinking about it,
as all I can remember is the band (Flogging Molly, if my memory
serves me correctly), and lots of alcohol. Fast forward to 2016,
and this time we had committed to going with Mema, Pops,
and Grandma Marge. Before our visit,  I combed the festival
web page to make sure there were things to keep our little leprechaun
occupied.  And, I'm here to say, that the Irish Festival knows
how to put on a good time for little lads and adults too!
(photo credit here goes to Maxwell James)

Our first stop was the Wee Folk area....where for $10
you can buy a wristband and your kid can go wild!
Max LOVED this area....even in the blistering hit
he wanted to go on all the slides, bounce in all the
houses, and dance his little heart out!

It was so nice because the lines weren't terribly
long for any of the slides! He scrambled up them
pretty quick, would turn the corner, slide right
down, and bounce off!
Max was pretty funny to watch in line too.
He was really blasé about other kids
cutting in front of him...and did really great
listening to the adults in charge on when
it was safe to start.

I think we did every
slide in the place, pausing only for water
and crushed ice breaks!

It was so much cooler under the big tents...but once
he finished the snow cone - it was on the dig pit!
I think they just dumped all the extra dirt in this
pit and then threw in some sand toys. But, Max
was pretty pleased with this set up and wanted
to stay longer. We enticed him away with promise
of the Wee Folk Craft Area.
Here again, I was so pleased at how much thought the festival folks
had put into this area. Max was able to sit right down,
pick out his art project (a sword, naturally).  I helped
him stick on the jewels and then he stamped his heart
out. And in the end, we added his name
with all the extra letter stickers.

He also wanted to decorate a green hat...again
with the stickers and jewels.  He wore this hat for
approximately three minutes before popping it
on top of Rob's head.
From here we looked around at all the Irish
canines (Irish Setters and Irish Wolf Hound)!
I was pretty set on taking home a Wolf Hound,
which was notably bigger than Max, but Rob
had to bring me crashing back to reality
by talking about the financial upkeep related
to a dog that size. Boo for being practical.
All in all we lasted about three hours at the festival....
which I thought was pretty good considering the
heat of the day and the lack of nap!
We boarded the shuttle (another way the City
of Dublin had truly thought of everything) and
headed back to our car!

Festival season is honestly the best
and another reason summer in Ohio
just can't be  beat :)
Can't wait for Joan of Arc Festival
in a couple weeks!

A Morning at the Bay

With Papa Rob and I both working at the Zoo - we get some
pretty sweet perks (i.e. cheetahs walking by my office and baby
binturongs crawling across my back are those recently coming to
mind).  One of the biggest summer time perks - is free admission
to Zoombeezi Bay (the water park affiliated with the Zoo).
Not only free admission for us - but we can always
get an additional ticket too.  Hooray!  So it seems
crazy that we waited until last Saturday to take advantage
of this!  It was well worth the wait!
The only mistake I made was thinking that the waterpark
opened at 10 because it's actually 10:30 but honestly
we didn't have to wait for long.  And being right on time
allowed us to get front row chairs by the Toddler
Tides area!

The water was a little chilly ....but I try not to let
on that I think it's cold...and so in we went -
and he tried all the slides and even went under the
giant mushroom (holding my hand)!

I thought this part of the park would be perfect for Max...but
as it turns out...he actually really likes the "lazy river"
and is tall enough for some of the other water slides
in Baboon Lagoon. I don't have a lot of pictures
of any of these events though - because I didn't want to
risk dropping my phone in the water.
We took several spins around the lazy river.
Max would wear his puddle jumper and float along
holding my hand - and then we got a tube!
The tube wasn't big enough for the both
of us, so I perched him on the side and
we motored around! He giggled the whole time!

There are no built in rest times at Zoombeezi - but
I mandated some rest/snack time anyway.

Hanging out in Baboon Lagoon was the real hit of
the morning! It has slides that are bit bigger and more
like a typical water slide. I was so proud of Max
for blazing through all the splashing water buckets
and listening to the life guards so well.
He probably rode this yellow water slide 25 times.
(suckered me into the huge icee...)

We also swam in the bigger pool together...I'm so
pleased with how confident he is in the water lately.
He loves to swim back and forth between people -
kicking his legs and paddling his arms.

All total we were there for about three hours -
which ended up being perfect because the rain
clouds were coming in.  I did build in some time
to ride the dry rides in Jungle Jack's landing - behold!
His favorite ride is the "Frog Hopper" over there...
although the "Swinging Gibbons" might be a close
second. By the time we were ready to leave - the
slow sprinkle had turned into a full on downpour.
We had to seek shelter by the bumper cars for about
fifteen minutes and then made a mad dash to the car.

On the way back to the car, we discovered huge
puddles left behind by the rain. Max declared his
sandals to be "water shoes" and jumped in every single
one! It was so funny! His shoes then proceeded
to make little squishy sounds all the way back to the car.

As the saying goes, "the days are long, but the summer
days are longer". I think that's how it goes, right? ;)
But truly - it's so nice to be able break up the heat
and humidity by going to Zoombeezi.
Perhaps the biggest *perk* of our trip to Zoombeezi bay though?
Sweet, sweet car naps that turn into long
afternoon naps. I'm not mad about it. :)
