Last weekend (and don't worry I plan to post our Fourth of July too),
we packed in lots of fun! There was so much to choose from...which
is why I love Columbus. This particular weekend there was
Powell Fest, Com(munity) Fest, the Delaware Splash Pad opening,
and the Big Rigs at COSI. Ultimately we chose to head downtown
and see all the big trucks and diggers converge on the front lawn of COSI.
This of course was right up Max's alley :)
They had a little bit of everything....from
garbage trucks, to cranes, diggers, scoopers,
and even lawn mowers!
My brilliant idea was to get there right when it
opened to try and beat the crowds...but I think
that was everyone's idea...so we had to wait in lines
for most of the vehicles. Max did okay with waiting
for the most part - except for the digger where you
actually got to manipulate it (with some help
from the actual professionals).
COSI did such a great job with having a variety of
machines available....and they even gave all the little
kids construction hats! I was surprised when Max
actually wanted to wear his for most of the morning.
At one point we went inside and played around
in the Kid's Space area (thankful for the air conditioning!).
We ate our lunch in their city scape park outside
and Max ran around even more trying to collect
the balls to put back in the pipes. When we came
back outside, there were no crowds!
We took that opportunity to try all the machines
one more time (or three because Max's strongest
skill right now is negotiation).
He would look longingly at the machines...and say
"maybe one more time, mama?" I mean, how
can I resist that? Also worth noting - his debut
in a tank top (or tanky top as he calls them).
His upper arms were so white! haha! But, he told me
really liked them and so we bought a few more
at Target later on in the afternoon.
On Sunday Max and Mama headed to Dayton (my parents were going
to watch him on Monday)...and they just happened to be having
"Rail Fest" at Carillon Park. I hadn't been to the Carillon in
years and years...but this was the perfect little event for Max.
Max LOVES trains. We were able to pack up
a picnic lunch and enjoy it on the lawn of park before
heading in. I was super happy to be debuting
my beloved "mexi blanket"...and Max was
debuting his second tanky top.
We enjoyed some simple sandwiches (PBJ and Turkey),
chips, apples, and cheese sticks - and a juice box
if your name is Max :) Max wanted to sit on the blanket
with Grandpa and was simultaneously worried
about all the ants underneath.
Mims and Mama took the Mexi blanket (isn't she
so beautiful)! When lunch was finished we just
walked over to the park.
Max spotted the Kona ice truck right away...
what this has to do with trains, I'm not sure.
But, it was a cool refreshing dessert so I can't
complain!
We waited in line for probably about 35 minutes
to ride this train. Though, when we finally were able
to see it - I would describe it as more of an engine
that pulls people on modified benches. Either way,
it was awesome because it was FREE (thanks to an
anonymous donor) and it was a really long ride.
The ride kept going and going...and all the while
I kept wondering how they kept all the trains from
crashing into each other? We passed probably five
other trains and never a crash! I guess this is what
engineers do?
Inside lots of the buildings they had model
trains set up...Max was loving watching them go
round and round. They also had different
kinds of real train cars that you could walk through
(passenger car, dining car, etc.)
While trains aren't normally my thing - it was
very cute to see Max so excited!
We walked all over the grounds of Carillon Park
and even came across this covered bridge!
We ended up in the Heritage Center with
displays that highlighted all things Dayton
related (especially cash registers from NCR).
But, the crowing jewel was this awesome carousel!
It's official name is the Carousel of Datyon Innovation.
Every object that you could ride on (31 total)
was something original/famous to Dayton.
Picture an IAMS dog food bag, Dayton Daily
newspaper, Wright Brother's airplance etc. ...very cool!
As I always say...we like to stay busy!
I'm so thankful our city (and Dayton)
have so opportunities for families to
get out and about! Can't wait for more
adventures :)
Over and out!
xoxo
